PERSONALITY:
"Die? I… I cannot die before I find that person."
The first thing to understand about exorcists of the Black Order is that they believe anyone, any passerby, any child or adult, can be a demon. The demons of his world are able to mask themselves as human and blend into the crowd; any new face is labeled as a threat and the first instinct is to fight, to kill, rather than investigate. This is the doctrine that Kanda lived by for almost all of his life and the lens he viewed life through. Receive assignments, complete assignments by killing - or, as Allen Walker would correct him on, exorcise them - the demons, return, rinse and repeat. Violence is and always will be the answer. At first glance in the beginning it seemed like Kanda was an exorcist only to fulfill his duty, but the truth ran deeper.
Kanda must live for a reason. He is a being of conviction and drive; with a goal in mind he will destroy all in his path in order to reach it. At heart he is a simple man. His purpose in life doesn't breach the world of transcendent, it doesn't delve into confusing moral conflicts, and it never strays into a realm of either nostalgia or hope. He lives for one reason and one reason alone.
Previously it was the need to find the wife of his past life, his treasured one, and working as an exorcist was only a means to his mission. In the process he has killed, harmed, even teetered on the brink of death after his battle with Skinn Bolic. Unlike other members of the church, he conviction and motivations aren't driven by God. While his religious affiliations aren't explicitly stated, the nature of innocence requires at least some loyalty to the cause of the church. Kanda may believe in God but it's unlikely that he worships him or plans on devoting his life to him.
His reason is paramount. To live on to find her he even had to kill Alma.
"This world is dark and it's so hard to breathe... but in this instant, when I laughed along with you, I felt that breathing just got a little easier."
But first, to explain the importance of Alma. Alma was his anti-thesis. At the age of 10, when they were both artificially born in the labs of the Asia Branch, Kanda was a loudmouthed and grumpy brat who wanted nothing to do with people. He's still grumpy and generally dislikes people or humanity in general, but at least holds his tongue better. His first reaction to Alma was to call him a creep, reject his offers of friendship, and fight him until members of the Order had to subdue them. The other boy was always smiling like an idiot in a place that Kanda hated from the very beginning; he didn't understand how Alma could stay cheerful and happy in a place where they died and suffered countless times each day.
But after beating each other up, Alma following him around for a good while, and lying in a pool of their own blood together, Kanda warmed up to him. The world was dark and hard to breathe because, as a second exorcist, the members of the order were conducting experiments on him where he was forced to attempt synchronization with the weapon called innocence. If it failed, he died. If he died, his regeneration brought him back to life. If he was alive, they tried again. And so on, until their bodies deteriorated to the point where their limbs fell apart and they had to rest until the next day. Alma was the only one who made him laugh and Alma was the only one who understood what it was like to be reborn knowing that you would die again; Alma was unwavering in his desire to become Kanda's friend, and nearly as stubborn as him. Alma was his first and only best friend.
Alma is dead. Killed, thought to be twice, by Kanda. The first was when they were children. Alma murdered all of the workers who had experimented on them and wanted to kill Kanda so they could die together; he had to choose between murdering his friend or accepting death. He chose the former. To continue his search, he had to join the organization that subjected him to the pain of torture and loss. So to Kanda death is a familiar friend and murder, quite honestly, doesn't faze him much anymore.
The second time, they entered a battle to the death but with the help of Allen Walker they were transported to a safe space away from the Black Order for Alma to die peacefully. There, Kanda discovered that the soul of his beloved one was in Alma all along. He had finally found her.
"Hey. Do you know what this flower is? A lotus flower. It grows from with the mud, towards the sky, and makes the world a fragrant place."
In a past life, Kanda once loved. He lived as an exorcist dedicated to the church and his beloved. He loved her dearly, with all that he had, enough for it to continue into his new body and push him to survive time and time again. His cold and cynical nature gives people the impression that he's unable to care deeply for anyone or anything; he rarely holds attachments to people and believes that in a war, sacrifices must be made.
Yet, he once believed in life enough to love another. Kanda has the capacity to care and the depth of a heart, he just hasn't shown it yet. He shows little bits of affection in his own way. A well placed insult, a rare compliment once in a while, and even affirmations of success and approval. He will never turn into someone as positive or kind as say, Allen Walker, but is slowly finding his own way back into trusting others and believing - maybe - that some can be saved.
Like the lotus, as his beloved compared him to, he has grown out of the mud. And while the sky was so brilliant it pained him the first time he saw it with his own eyes, he has had enough of the sky.
"But now... This regret simply won't let me die peacefully."
After the death and discovery of Alma, Kanda returned to the order. Everyone expected him to leave but he came back for one reason. His new reason - find Allen Walker and repay his debt to him. Walker gave him what he values most, freedom, by allowing him to have Alma's last moments alone. Kanda knows he could've prevented Allen's transformation into the 14th if he had told the Order instead of keeping the information to himself, a decision made out of his intense apathy, and he takes the blame for it.
But his repayment is not done with the hope that Allen Walker will survive. No, Kanda's job as they both know is that in the situation where Walker turns into the 14th and loses himself, he will kill him. This is his atonement; this is his reason. Once his job is completed, he plans on leaving; he's had enough of life, of the damned war, of God and the illusion of freedom. He's ready to leave this world, but only when his debts are repaid and he can sleep in peace.
"He won't play up to anyone. He won't be led astray by anything. He simply places himself in a clear space."
Kanda, above all else, is clarity. His convictions refuse to be swayed. His values stay true and he believes himself invulnerable to the domination of others; the decisions he makes are his, and his alone. No matter what life throws at him he's sure that he will carve his own path through it rather than blindly following the one given to him. His allegiances are hard to win and his trust even harder. Some may argue that his approach to life is oversimplified and narrow, but it only strengthens his ability to stay firm and grounded in his own desires and goals.
As seen in his interactions with Lenalee, he sometime lends her strength and grounding. Not through any effort made on his part, but by his steadfast nature and refusal to compromise. He is unchanging, including his hot temper as much as he tries to restrain himself sometimes. While he isn't the wittiest or most book-smart guy out there, he makes up for it with his direct and biting nature. His strength lies in his focus and concentration.
If he was a normal man with a normal life, he would continue to live without many luxuries or materialistic wishes. He would still follow his routine of self-discipline, training, and meditating but maybe would indulge in more recreational interests like gardening.

Shit.
[ This is not his purpose. This is not his war to fight and shed blood for. Yet, he makes no protest as he draws his sword out.
A mercy kill?
No. He slashes his own palm and holds it to the Nawali's mouth, giving her no warning as he pulls the wood out with a grunt. Blood gushes out dark and wet -- but she begins to heal. ]

ABILITIES:
ᴇɴʜᴀɴᴄᴇᴅ ᴀʀᴛɪғɪᴄɪᴀʟ ʀᴇɢᴇɴᴇʀᴀᴛɪᴏɴ As a Second Exorcist, Kanda can recover at an accelerated speed and is able to withstand the blood of Akuma (Akuma can infect normal humans and turn them into Akuma by use of their blood). His regeneration applies to almost all situations, even mortal or memory based ones. He can be reborn after death, in 580 seconds as seen in his fight with Alma, regenerate lost limbs, and even survive a crushed skull. After his memory is modified by Apocraphos, his regeneration automatically restores them by expunging Apocraphos' "feathers". Rather than restore physical ailments, this ability seems to apply to anything that alters or modifies his natural state.
This ability is marked by a tattoo on his chest. The ring around the symbol changes depending on the severity of his injuries, while the symbol itself remains unchanged. It is a variant of the symbol "Om", a symbol featured in Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism. In the latest arc, it's seen that Kanda has suffered a considerable loss of life force. He notes how he used to be able to consume any amount of alcohol without becoming drunk/getting a hangover, but now is more easily affected. After his battle with Alma where he entered the fifth illusion it can be drawn that he has depleted a large amount of his remaining life force. It's also important to note that a large enough lethal shock of electricity can temporarily pause his ability to regenerate, though he will revive himself after a few hours.
Kanda is also able to heal others by use of his blood. The more fatal the wound, the more life force it takes from him. It's unclear if his blood's healing powers only apply to physical wounds.
ᴘʜʏsɪᴄᴀʟ ᴘʀᴏᴡᴇss Kanda is stronger than the average human, as seen in his ability to cleave Akuma in half using a standard blade.
sᴘᴇᴇᴅ Kanda is faster than the average human and is able to leap beyond average distances.
ᴇxᴘᴇʀᴛ sᴡᴏʀᴅsᴍᴀɴ Kanda is an expert swordsman, as seen in his ability to hold a Level Four (highest level) Akuma off with a standard sword. He is able to use various forms of Japanese swords.
ᴍᴜɢᴇɴ - ᴄʀʏsᴛᴀʟ ᴛʏᴘᴇ Mugen was previously a metal/physical sword that Kanda used as his Innocence based weapon, but upon his return to the Black Order he re-syncronized with Mugen to turn it into a Crystal Type. The crystal type formed out of the blood that flowed from the two cross stigmata placed on his upper forearms. So far, crystallized Mugen has been unbreakable and considerably stronger than the standard sword. Currently he still carries it around as he would with a regular sword.
Kanda's skill with Mugen has breached the Critical Point of synchronization (100%), which means he is able to reach new levels of power and can unlock powerful new abilities. This also means he's able to become a General in the Black Order, the highest ranking exorcists whose strength surpasses all others.
However, it's implied that Kanda's innocence may be rebelling against him because of how he's supporting Allen Walker and defying the will of God/church/innocence inside of him. If his synchronization rate falls to zero, he will become a Fallen One where his innocence will take over his body and mind. Fallen Ones typically die within a 24 hours. Even if severed from their innocence, the Fallen One suffers complete brain death.
ғɪʀsᴛ ᴛᴏ ғɪғᴛʜ ɪʟʟᴜsɪᴏɴs1: NETHERWORLD INSECTS - Kanda swings his sword and releases a small swarm of supernatural creatures that devour his opponents.
2: DOUBLE ILLUSION SWORD - Kanda covers his sword and scabbard in a coat of energy that creates a pair of energy blades. (Unknown how this would be used with Mugen in a crystallized state.)
3: TRIPLE ILLUSION - In the state of Ascending Flower, Kanda drastically increases his speed and strength at the cost of some of his life.
4: FOURTH ILLUSION STYLE - Kanda's pupils change to four dots and he gains another drastic increase in speed and power.
5: Mugen emits a large amount of dark, lightning-like energy. More of his life force is used up at a rapider pace. Kanda enters a berserk-like state and his hair pales to light purple to signify the loss.
INVENTORY: his exorcist uniform along with a change of civilian clothes, his essential hair-tie, and his sword mugen
